Youth Sentinel Program

The Sentinel Program is a paid summer opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on experience in conservation work on Fishers Island.

This year’s program includes an updated structure, responsibilities, and expectations. Participants will assist with monitoring shorelines, supporting wildlife surveys, and contributing to conservation projects throughout the summer. The program also includes training, weekly check-ins, and a final presentation summarizing each Sentinel’s work.

Position Details

  • Paid summer position
  • Approximately 8–10 hours per week
  • 4–6 week commitment during the summer

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with monitoring protected shorebird nesting areas
  • Supporting horseshoe crab surveys and other seasonal wildlife monitoring
  • Collecting environmental and habitat data
  • Participating in conservation projects and fieldwork across the island
  • Assisting with community outreach and Conservancy events

Qualifications

  • Current high school to early college students
  • Interest in conservation or environmental science
  • Strong interest in Fishers Island’s natural habitats and wildlife
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Reliable, organized, and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to participate in fieldwork and training sessions
