Since November 1986, the ARC has set sail from Las Palmas, bound westward across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Bringing together over 200 yachts and 1200+ sailors from all over the world, the fleet gathers weeks ahead in Las Palmas Marina for training and to prep and pack the boats for the long three-plus weeks trip.
The boat’s name is Jack. Designed by Ker Yacht Design, it is a 75-foot McConaghy MC75 catamaran. The 12 crew members include Captain Byrne Murphy and Navigator Mike ‘Mickey’ Broughton, who has sailed across the Atlantic 28+ times! Byrne and Geb met a year after college on a dock in the Virgin Islands. Both were looking for boats to the Pacific. In Antiqua, they ultimately found the right boat to crew on and sailed to Tahiti together – Geb continued on to New Zealand.
