IN MEMORIAM: Anne Helen Edwards

by Jane Ahrens

Anne Helen Edwards, 94, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at her home in Brooksby Village, Peabody, Massachusetts, with her devoted husband David by her side. After a remarkably full and loving life spanning nearly a century, Anne left this world surrounded by the same quiet strength and warmth she brought to everyone around her.

Born in New York City in 1931 to Anna and John Unkel, Anne’s early years were shaped by family and adventure. During World War II, she moved with her family to Fishers Island, New York, where her father served as a post engineer at Fort Wright. There, on that small, scenic island, Anne grew up and graduated from Fishers Island High School in 1949. She pursued her calling in nursing, completing her training at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City—a path that reflected her caring nature and desire to help others.

In 1952, Anne married the love of her life, David Edwards, beginning a remarkable 73-year partnership built on mutual devotion, shared laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised five children while following David’s engineering career across the country—from New Jersey and Illinois to Colorado to Massachusetts in 1967 and New Hampshire in 1987, where they built a lasting home and community.

Anne was the heart of her family: a gifted cook whose meals filled homes with comfort, a talented seamstress who mended clothes and created beautiful quilts, a homemaker who created spaces of joy and welcome. She cherished family gatherings at the beach, summer cookouts, birthday celebrations, and the special glow of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Anne and David delighted in traveling together, exploring Europe, Japan, Ireland, Kenya, and the homes of their far-flung children, collecting memories and stories along the way.

With a wide circle of family and friends who adored her, Anne lived a life rich in love and connection. She is survived by her beloved husband, David; their five children and their spouses: David Jr. and Gail of Fishers Island, NY; Susan and Debbie of Atkinson, MA; Greg and Linda of Sherwood, OR; Terrance and Susan of Richmond, VA; and Peter and Kathie of Haverhill, MA; along with eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She also leaves her brother, John Unkel, and his wife Ruth of Emerald Isle, NC.

Anne’s legacy is one of enduring love, resilience, and the simple joy of being together. She will be deeply missed yet forever remembered in the warmth of every family table, every beach sunset, and every shared smile.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 390 Main St, North Andover, MA, 01845, on March 21, 2026, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
