What We Wish We Knew When we moved here… or any time

by Jane Ahrens

Helpful hints for new neighbors, and each other, in no particular order.

  • Always a good idea to get a vehicle reservation for the ferry. ⛴️. They are not expensive, guarantee a spot, and if the schedule changes, you get notified (although it rarely changes).
  • The Village Market is closed on Sundays, always, and from 1-3 except in July & August
  • You can ‘mail’ your utility bill at the window on the right side inside the PO without a stamp!
  • Medicine from The Medicine Shoppe in Old Saybrook always/only comes on the 3:30 ferry.
  • The best places to work from your car and have cell service are (…add suggestions below) or visit the Library.
  • Village Market often cooks delicious rotisserie chickens. You can call and reserve one for pick up if you like.
  • Everyone is welcome at the American Legion. You don’t have to be a veteran, but if a veteran walks in, they should be offered a seat at the bar.
  • The liquor store is open every afternoon. If they are closed and you have a real ‘liquor emergency’, the number to call is on the shop’s door.
  • Fill out an application for a resident ferry card as soon as you are settled.
  • Visit the PO to inquire about a mail box.
  • Address everything like this: 123Main Street, #876 (your PO Box number), Fishers Island, NY 06390
  • Yes, 06390 is a Connecticut zip code because the mail is delivered to New London, before it takes the ferry ride to New York State.
  • If you get a notice from UPS or FedEx that your package has been delivered, that probably means it’s in New London. Just wait a few ferry runs, and it will get to freight on Fishers.
  • Visit the Community Center and find out about the fitness center & bowling alley.
  • You need a FIDCO sticker for your car to get the East End. Available at the Gate House. Bike stickers are free.
  • Volunteer! You will meet people!
  • You will NEVER drive onto the ferry to come home with an empty car!
  • Visit https://fishersisland.net and subscribe to the monthly newsletter, the Fog Horn, at the bottom of the website page.
  • The road to Race Point, the furthest point west, is next to the gate to the Compost Station. A great place for sunsets.
  • After a long hiatus, we were reminded it still snows here – so line your driveway with stakes in late fall, and find a snow plower. The fuel delivery people and Fire Department will thank you!
  • We have fabulous Ferry, Highway, Fire Department, and Utility crews that make the whole show work, even in stormy and unpleasant weather!
  • Tape the Transfer and Compost Station schedule to the inside of a cupboard door. It is very useful!
