We are delighted to report that the very generous $150,000 matching challenge from the Sanger Fund, McCance Foundation, and an anonymous donor has generated an outpouring of gifts to support the final phase of our once-in-a-generation renovation of Union Chapel and its Parsonage. The challenge has now been met, and we have sufficient funds to complete the work. Thank you to everyone who helped us cross the finish line. We could not be more grateful!
Accomplishments 2021-2024
The project began in the spring of 2021, when we removed asbestos floor tiles throughout the chapel; shored up and then leveled the concrete slab beneath the floors; installed new flooring; painted the sanctuary, upgraded the electrical supply, HVAC, WIFI, and AV systems; completely renovated the kitchen; created a new double-door entrance vestibule with glass doors across from the Ferguson window; upgraded paint and lighting in the media lab, pastor’s office and parlor. We also installed glass doors at the back of the Fellowship Hall and rebuilt much of the back wall in the process. Around the corner from the church, the Parsonage gained a new kitchen; a new bathroom upstairs to create a primary suite; and a new laundry room in the basement.
What remains?
Currently in progress is work on the Fellowship Hall, which includes the installation of a picture window (see design above), new furniture and light fixtures, painting, acoustical improvements, and replacing the divider between the hall and the sanctuary. We also have final work to do on the audio visual and HVAC systems. At the Parsonage, we plan to add a new front entrance vestibule/mudroom.
What is the once-in-a-generation project making possible?
Union Chapel serves Fishers Island year-round. In the last several years, the Chapel has expanded its programming and engaged significantly more people in our worship life and community events. Especially in the winter months, a warm and beautiful community space can attract people to events, lift spirits and build relationships. As home to a growing congregation that cares for each other and a resident pastor who is active in the community, the Chapel makes a distinctive contribution to Fishers Island.
If you missed the opportunity to participate in the matching challenge, please know how much we also appreciate unrestricted annual gifts to support our year-round programming. Information about ways to give is available on our website and your generosity is warmly welcomed.
With gratitude always,
Union Chapel Church Council
