Dear friends & family, vacationers and those that so desperately need a vacation,
As August rears a sultry mane and our island waters become again almost tepid, I am compelled to pause from official business and issue a brief (but meaningful) midsummer update from my perch atop the Pequot flagpole.
Many have noticed an uptick in our social media attitude this season. In years past, we have often focused on those late nights of drinking and dancing, namely attendance and chaos – and while that service is very much still thriving, it is all too commonly used as a barometer of the FOMO to success curve. Colloquially, a “vibe check”. Vicariousness bares an ugly curse with her loss of mystique. I offer in her stead a concept of presence, and one of legacy. I offer you social media rife with tragic comedy, that of mockery and of course, justice.
Of mention, we have located the perpetrators of multiple parking lot fender benders, vandalisms, and relatively minor misconducts – happily none of which have ever resulted in injury or legal action. I admit that this is often done in poor taste, and I only wish to dispel the speculation and admit to you here – yes, it’s absolutely true, I do (kind of) enjoy the joke.
I derive a genuine rare peace from bringing these indiscretions to light in a world scarce with equity, and I believe that you too, as subscriber, get a specific kind of joy from being party to it?
Furthermore, I’d like to use this platform to thank you. Never in my life have I received such overwhelming encouragement – about the menu, about the institution, and how hard we are working. At the market, at the Post Office, at the beach – seriously on the daily, I’m being stopped with congratulations or support and in recognition of the work we are doing, or to share a laugh about the funny stuff –
I really feel more than ever that people here are being more purposeful in their daily life, more accountable for their responsibility as a member of this community, or visibly trying to be. Maybe I’m projecting, or maybe manifesting.
All of this being said, those of you good stewards of Fishers Island, doing the lord’s work – keeping the island clean, taking care of each other and saying what needs to be said – as long as you keep up the ratings, I will and we will continue to uphold our end of the bargain.
Scheduling through August will remain the same. Open Wednesday through Monday at 4 pm with a limited menu, 5 pm for full dinner. Closed entirely on Tuesdays. We do this not because we don’t enjoy your patronage, but because we are a business which operates with a limited staff and as such are limited with availability and time.
We will be closed for our annual Block Island trip on Monday August 18. There will be an evil ghost, a hungry German shepherd, and a raccoon securing the property in our absence.
The menu itself will see some changes from July to August, with several of our main staples being replaced. I would jump on your favorite items this weekend (7/31- 8/4) to wish them a fond farewell. I’m naturally here tempted to tease you with our new offerings, but once again see: mystique / active participation. There will, of course, be weekly specials through October that are offered on a first come first serve basis. We do sell Fishers Island Oysters as they are available to us. Occasionally, this means that we will run out of stock before the weekend has concluded, and I’m sorry.
Reminder that we do not accept phone-in take-out orders. We will happily box up your dinner for you, but you’ll need to order it in person from the shed or bar. This is not only to encourage you to perhaps enjoy a beverage in the short window of time it would take to prepare your food, but also to prioritize our guests who’ve chosen to dine in. Historically, when we’ve accepted phone calls or online ordering, it draws the attention of dedicated bartenders and servers away from patrons and towards devices. I do not believe this is the type of business we need to foster on Fishers Island.
We will have live music from James Harris of Mystic / Stonington on Friday August 15 during dinner service, playing acoustic covers of all types and accepting requests. If you haven’t seen him or are unaware of his act prepare for all ages amusement and authentic musicality.
We will have a live band, Seneca Street (with Dandelions?), playing Saturday August 23, showcasing some of Fishers Island’s very own. This was a really fun night last year with great attendance. I would come early and stay late, and remember to keep your shoes on, dudes.
Fridays and Saturdays are still 21 and up after 10 pm through August. DJs Hertz Maneuvers and DJ PGBTQ+ playing all your favorites and some of your least favorite jams. Remember to be respectful when requesting a song, and to perhaps be more tolerant of genre crossover.
Dance, as both concept and exercise, is fluid. If every culture in the entire world has dance in their fundamental practices of spirituality, art, and communion, then surely you can attempt to enjoy a Chicago deep house track or contemporary rap for 3 to 4 minutes between scheduled doses of “You Can Call me Al” and “Dancing Queen,” AND
If you absolutely cannot grin and bear it – should you be so definitively offended by those democratic processes, that is songs been played in the order in which they are received – should you be so upset by a fairly allocated queue based almost entirely on arrival time, and you must act out or curse at someone, be reminded – I will find a video image of you and I will make example of your petulance on the world wide web.
Thank you thank you thank you a million times over. We at the Pequot are all genuinely very excited for August, and you should be too! As always I am an open book, and I welcome any thoughts or considerations, keeping positivity and togetherness as our keystone.
