Job Title: 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher (Grades 7–12)

Position Overview:

Fishers Island School seeks a dedicated and collaborative Special Education Teacher to serve students in grades 7–12. The ideal candidate will provide specialized instruction, case management, and learning support services to ensure students with diverse needs reach their fullest potential.

This position requires a strong understanding of special education regulations, instructional strategies, and individualized planning, as well as a commitment to working closely with general education teachers, families, and support staff to foster student success in both academic and social-emotional domains.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction: Provide direct and indirect special education services aligned with students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • IEP Development & Compliance: Write, implement, and monitor IEPs in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations.
  • Collaboration: Partner with general education teachers to adapt curriculum, develop differentiated instructional strategies, and implement accommodations/modifications.
  • Progress Monitoring: Collect and analyze data on student performance to guide instruction and report on progress toward IEP goals.
  • Case Management: Serve as the primary contact for assigned students’ IEPs, coordinating meetings, timelines, and required documentation.
  • Behavior Support: Implement positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) to foster a productive learning environment.
  • Transition Planning: Support students in developing post-secondary goals, including career readiness and life skills.
  • Communication: Maintain regular, clear communication with parents/guardians, service providers, and colleagues.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with special education best practices, laws, and instructional strategies.

Required Qualifications

  • Eligibility for New York State Certification in Special Education (Grades 7–12) or Students with Disabilities (Grades 7–12).

Preferred Strengths (Nice to Have)

  • Experience in small-school or multi-age instructional environments.
  • Proficiency in co-teaching and inclusive classroom models.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and digital tools to support learning.
  • Experience implementing evidence-based reading and math interventions.
