IN MEMORIAM: Susan Hansen Jeffries

by Jane Ahrens

Susan Hansen Jeffries, age 77, passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2025 in Palm Beach.

Susan loved to laugh and had the best sense of humor. She lived a full, and colorful, life surrounded by close friends from all over the world. Born April 9th, 1948 in Washington DC, Susan grew up in Miami Beach, FL, and New York City, where her father owned and operated Hansen House, a company that produced sheet music and published educational and popular books on music. Prior to attending Boston University, Susan lived out every young girl’s fantasy at the time by joining The Beatles on their final tour in 1966. After graduating college, she moved back to New York City and became the Director of Public Relations for Hansen House. She married Michael in 1971 at her parents’ Miami Beach home on Biscayne Bay. She loved that home, and the neighborhood, even after the infamous Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar moved in next door. Her father always said that he was a terrific neighbor.

Susan and Michael’s son, Andrew, was born in 1980 and Susan became the most devoted mother a child could ever ask for, supporting Andrew in anything and everything he did.

Throughout her life, Susan spent time living in New York City, Columbus, OH, Los Angeles, CA, and Palm Beach, FL, but it was Fishers Island, NY where she felt most at home. She absolutely loved the community on Fishers and was active in it throughout her life. She built her dream home there and was lucky enough to spend every summer on the island, starting in 1979, surrounded by her dearest friends and family. She was so excited when Andrew and his wife Annabel married on Fishers Island in 2013, and she hosted the rehearsal dinner at her home under a beautiful orange supermoon, surrounded by the people she loved most. It was a night, and weekend, those in attendance will never forget.

Susan is survived and deeply missed, by her husband of 54 years, Michael; their son Andrew and wife Annabel; brother Charles Hansen II; and her two dogs, Cosmo and Maude. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Isabel Hansen; and sister, Kathleen Hansen.

A memorial service was held on May 22nd at Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, followed by an interment on her beloved Fishers Island later this summer.
