Mid-Summer Gardening Check List

A little bit of tidying up in the midst of summer will pay off in the weeks and months to follow.

–Cut back all fading perennials to encourage new growth. (Leave the hydrangeas alone they are more of a shrub.)

–Deadhead wilted flowers to encourage new blooms on all plants.

–Feed Container plants with fish emulsion or other organic plant food and continue to water when containers get dry.

–Spray roses with a homemade rose spray or Captain Jack’s Rose Rx

Homemade Rose Spray
2-3 T Baking Soda
2 T Joy or other mild dishwashing soap
Mixed with a gallon of water
Spray every 7 to 10 days if needed

–Weed flower beds and pull out invasive vines like Bind Weed and Black Swallow Wart before they take over your garden.

After mid-August, it is usually safe to plant new perennials so they become well-established before the first frost.

These simple chores will encourage your garden to prosper and grow well into the fall.
