Fishers Island: No Drone Zones

by Jane Ahrens

We have all heard the increasing number of drone reports by pilots and air traffic controllers at large local airports, including Logan, LaGuardia, and JFK. It is incredibly dangerous, as a drone can take out a plane engine or worse.

The Fishers Island Ferry District received notification from the USCG on Tuesday morning, July 28, 2026 that a drone was tracked at Elizabeth Field, 0B8 on Fishers Island, NY.

Drone sightings anywhere near a Fishers Island Ferry (USCG) or Elizabeth Field (FAA) will be reported to the Town of Southold Police and the National Response Center.

Please read the following message from the US Coast Guard about a recent sighting:

The CT State Police installed a new drone detection system in New London last Friday. On Saturday, July 25, we detected a drone flight on the approach to Runway 7 at Elizabeth Field (see below). The FAA checked the drone’s serial number, but unfortunately, it is not registered. While this incident isn’t directly related to your marine operations, I thought you should be aware. The pilot couldn’t have chosen a worse location to fly. If your team sees anyone flying a drone near the airport, your vessels, or the terminals, I recommend reporting it to the National Response Center and the local police department.

Drone owners are asked to register their equipment and comply with local, state, and national regulations regarding flight locations.
