Fishers Island News Clippings

by Jane Ahrens

News clippings are collected by many over the years as the press runs reports of newsworthy accomplishments, local events, and human interest stories. We are starting a collection here and some, from time to time, may need a date added. Can you help? You may have remembered this story, person or event. Let us know by emailing finyinfo@gmail.com if we can ‘fill in the date’ or have a few clippings to share.

Mrs. L.C. Foyle contributed many news updates to The Day and always as Mrs. L.C. Foyle, 465, her phone number.

Thank you to Matt Edwards for his help on the dates for the early ’60s collection.

Cold Weather Hits Underground Pipes
More than 20 straight days of below freezing mornings have take a severe toll of underground water pipes and mains. Although the worst appears to be over, there is still danger of frozen service lines, Supt. A. J. Cantin, of the Fishers Island Estates Water Filtration Plant emphasized Tuesday. He said the threat will exist until there is a good thaw.
Weather of the past two weeks has only served to drive frost deeper in the ground, Cantin reported. There is an average depth of 26 inches of frost in the ground.
Persons having lived here many years say it is the greatest depth of frost since 1917 when 30 inches was recorded. Freezing took place in most cases before the big snowstorm of Feb. 4.

Late Monday afternoon a ten-inch main burst at the east end residential section near the Firestone home. Water supply for nearly the entire island was disrupted by low pressure or by no water at all. The Cantin home was swamped with telephone inquiries. Trouble shooting began immediately and about 8 p.m. the broken main was discovered.
Valves were shut off at the plant and opened at the Bell Hill reservoir in the west end of the island to furnish water until repairs could be made. Tuesday morning Lawrence Baldwin, W. Gordon Ahman, George Griffin, Ernest Middleton, Jr. and Anthony Hardy completed the repairs in two hours and fifteen minutes.
At the Fishers Island Power Plant a six inch break in the main was repaired. Breaks have been made in four, six, eight and ten inch water lines and mains.
During the break in the ten inch main there was a loss of 250,000 gallons of water.
