Can we swap our mittens for garden gloves yet?

9 Days till Spring!

Witch Hazel

If you find the wait for spring blossoms just too much to bare, consider adding a new tree to your yard.

Hamamelis Vernalis, a variety of witch hazel, blooms brilliant red, orange, or yellow betwern January and March.

Worth the wait…

It can often feel hard to let winter take its course. While we welcome the cozy moments with loved ones near, sometimes waiting for mornings filled with sunshine and the joyous eruption of green outside our windows can drag on so long your left wondering if spring will ever come.

After all, ‘ hope deferred makes the heart sick’

But take heart, spring will come and we’ll be graced with all those gorgeous blooms again soon.

And while all those bulbs have been hard at work getting ready to shoot forth out of the ground, we at the garden want to assure you that we too have been hard at work below the surface, setting the stage for self sufficiency and longevity for the community garden.

The Garden by Gail Edwrads 2025

The community garden is now officially recognized by the State of New York as an independent non-profit organization and is actively pursuing federal recognition. For the last five years, the FI Community Center has been helping the garden to flourish and become a stable part of the island community. As a grass roots initiative, the insights provided into the workings of an established non-profit by the community center to the community garden has played a vital role in helping the garden to achieve strength and independence.

We are so grateful, and so excited to embark on the next season of the Fishers Island Community Garden’s life, but we’re going to need a little more help!

Currently, we’re looking for reliable volunteers to join us in caring for the garden during the summer months. We always need help with mowing, and watering, dead heading, and weeding. If you’re interested in getting involved for about an hour a week we’d love to hear from you!

Shoots and blooms coming soon!

Itching to get your hands in the dirt now? It’s tomato starting time! It’s also a good time to get peppers, eggplant, and okra going!
