The New York State of Health office in Albany, which handles the exchange/ACA process for all New York residents, has recently clarified information regarding Fishers Island residents’ ability to receive medical care in New London, CT.
- You must be enrolled in healthcare through the NYS Marketplace.
- All participants should be approved for out-of-network authorizations to health care providers practicing in New London, CT.
- The participating health plan companies include Empire BC/BS Health Plus, United Healthcare, Emblem Health, Healthfirst, Fidelis, and Oscar.
- Enrollees may ask their health plan to possibly approve an out-of-network authorization to a provider outside of the New London, CT area, but it is not a guarantee. In order words, the policyholder will need to call the provider and/or the insurance to get permission for a “GAP exception” before seeing a doctor in New London.
This is a great start for all of us that have had to travel hours and many times overnight to see providers in NYS.
