The Fishers Island Fire Department welcomes new members all year round. This vital organization of the Fishers Island community is looking for volunteer firefighters, EMTs, and Sea Stretcher captains & navigators. All individuals whose primary residence is on Fishers Island are eligible, and those who commute to the Island for work every day may be considered. Founded in 1927, the department has 54 active volunteers, plus 3 new probationary EMTs. These members serve in various capacities: department officers, firefighters, pump operators, ambulance squad EMTs, and Sea Stretcher captains and navigators. Additional members serve as advisors, drivers, radio control, and in other important capacities. Some fill multiple roles – 33 firefighters, 13 EMTs, 9 on the Sea Stretcher, and 1 is a paramedic.
The Department is looking for volunteers of all ages, age 15+!
Life Members are those who have served for over 20 years in the department. 14 of the 23 Life Members that live on Island are active currently. The Department also has 4 Junior Members, all students at Fishers Island School.
