Be a 1st Responder: Animal Rescue Program for Mystic Aquarium

Help be the eyes, ears, and helping hands for Mystic Aquarium on Fishers Island

Here you can be recertified or become a newly trained First Responder for the Mystic Aquarium – by October 10.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a First Responder with Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program!

Thank you for your interest in becoming a First Responder with Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program!

This is our first year doing a virtual training, so I am still trying to figure out all the kinks with the process and appreciate your patience in advance. If you are a new responder to the program, watching the training does not mean that you automatically must become a First Responder. If you get through the training and decide that being a responder is not for you – that’s completely fine! You will only become a responder in our system once you complete the quiz and sign up for our google classroom (details below). There is no time commitment for being a First Responder. When we get a call about an animal on our hotline, the staff managing the hotline that day will search our system for responders who live near (or applied to respond to) a particular town. We will then go down our list of responders in that area and call you to see if you are available that day. If you are, then great! If you aren’t, then no worries at all. That just means we move on to calling the next person on our list.  If you are available to go on a response, then you will log any hours you volunteer for that day in our Better Impact system.

If you haven’t filled out an application in our new volunteer database, Better Impact, please do so at MyImpactPage – Animal Rescue – First Responder (betterimpact.com). This step must be completed before you watch the training.

Once you have completed your application on Better Impact, click on the link to the virtual training here: https://youtu.be/47GwlYjFBGQ This should take you about an hour and a half to complete.

After you watch the training, you will need to follow these steps to either log into your gmail account or create a gmail account if you don’t have one. Our Animal Rescue Program has a google classroom that you will need to join. You will receive a brief quiz on the training in google classroom and will have until October 10 to complete the quiz. I am sure everyone will do great on the quiz, but if you need to re-take it there will be an opportunity to do that as well!

The following links will take you to documents that explain the process in further detail.
