The Fishers Island Waste Management District would like to thank all those on the island that have worked with us during the COVID crisis. Having all our normal routines interrupted has only added to the stress of the situation. Throughout the last two months, the District has strived to continue to offer needed services while keeping both employees and visitors safe. We feel our plans have been very effective.

The District feels that we can now safely have both stations open at their normal hours and continue to provide the needed safety for all involved. As such, starting Monday, May 4, both stations will return to their normal operating hours. Social distancing practices will still be the standard.

At the Transfer Station, only one visitor will continue to be allowed to dump their waste or recyclables at a time.

At the Compost Station, visitors will be asked to stop at the attendant’s building, and then will be directed when it is safe to proceed. The only form of payment will be credit cards for the time being.

All offices (including the main office) will continue to be closed to all but District personnel. And all visitors will still be asked to keep the six-foot required distance from both staff and other visitors.

Again, thank you for working with us, and please stay safe.

Update: April 9, 2020

The District has received inquiries as to when the Compost Station will be opening. The District is currently taking this under consideration.

Presently, our focus is on providing the essential removal of home waste and recycling. Our priority has been to ensure ample backup capacity for household dumpsters. We are being overly cautious through the anticipated peak, which should be in the next two to three weeks. However, this is not the only consideration for whether the Compost Station will open.

Currently, the Transfer Station has a policy of one visitor using the different dumpsters at a time. This allows for a steady traffic flow and appropriate social distancing. The Compost Station is a larger facility where it is not as easy to control the flow. While we understand the desire for disposing waste at this facility, we must consider the health of our employees and the public.

The District will monitor the situation and attempt to open the Compost Station when events allow.
Please monitor FishersIsland.net and the District’s website for updates.
Thank you and stay safe.

Update: March 30, 2020

The Transfer Station will remain open for its regular weekday schedule only.

When visiting the station please follow safe distancing and let one visitor at a time use the dumpsters, whether on the upper level or the lower level. Please have your waste separated correctly before arriving and have your cardboard broken down to the correct size.

By following these simple rules, we can all work together and continue to make sure everyone stays safe.

For best practice during this time, please do not visit the office, but call if you need to speak with management or have any questions.

Dear Fishers Islanders,

The District has been closely monitoring the ongoing events concerning the corona virus, and the mandates being put forth from government agencies. As such the District has determined that in the interest of its employees and community members the following changes will be implemented:

As of Monday, March 23rd, the Compost Station will be closed until further notice.
As of Monday, March 23rd, the Transfer Station will be only open for normal posted hours during the weekday. It will not be open for the weekends until further notice. When bringing waste to the Transfer Station, have all waste separated and cardboard cut to 2×2 pieces. This will allow for quick transfer of trash and allow for the proper social distancing.

For members of the community taking part in the Pilot Organic Composting, due to the limited staff and hours, we will be suspending the collection of organics until further notice.

These policies will be reviewed weekly and any updates will be posted on Facebook, the District’s website and Fishersisland.net.

These changes are temporary and hopefully, if everyone works together, be over quickly.

Everyone please be smart and stay well.

Thank you,

Alan R. Thibodeau
