To the Members of the Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church Community;

First of all, we hope and pray that you and your family are healthy and safe and that there is swift and complete end to the COVID-19 pandemic and all the suffering that it has brought.

I am writing on behalf of the Parish Council of our church to update you on the Summer plans for the church and to also appeal for your help.

As of May 22, we are still not yet allowed to have Mass at the church. We are subject to the restrictions of New York State and the Diocese of Norwich.  We are also sensitive to the guidelines of the Island Community Board (ICB) and the Island Health Project (IHP). We would encourage all of you to regularly check the Fishers Island website (www.fishersisland.net) for updates from the ICB and IHP. Our Pastor Father Mark O’Donnell will keep us informed about changes at the Norwich Diocese, and hopefully Father Mark and the other priests from St. Joseph’s in New London will be able to start coming to the Island to say Mass when the various restrictions are lifted.

We are also in close touch with Father Kevin (Gabriel) Gillen, of the Dominican Friars, and they are interested in coming to the Island again this Summer, if the various restrictions permit.  One of the Friars (Father Alan Piper from Providence College) may come up and stay in the Rectory from early June to early July and be available to meet with individuals in a way that follows the appropriate social distancing protocols.

In the meantime, we encourage you to participate in one of the many Masses that are now streamed live online via YouTube and Facebook.  Father Mark and the other priests at St. Joseph’s in New London broadcast Sunday Mass at 10 am every Sunday.  For access information, go to the St. Joseph’s website ( www.saintjosephcatholicchurch.org).

The church is open for those who want to stop by for private prayer. If you go to the church, please use the hand sanitizer provided and please respect social distancing if anyone else is there when you are.

The Hit or Miss thrift shop is closed until further notice and the shop is not accepting any further donations until it reopens.  Please do not leave any items near the shop or in the parking lot.

Finally, we would like to ask for your continued financial support.  Our Lady of Grace church relies heavily on the donations made during the Summer months and on the revenues from the Hit or Miss Shop. We don’t know when regular Masses will resume and when the Shop will open, but we know that we are likely to suffer a severe drop in revenues, with only limited decrease in expenses.

We are very conscious of the needs of others in these tough times and accordingly we have already donated $8,000 to families in need on the Island, and are setting aside an additional $5,000 for future needs as the impact of the crisis continues.

We would ask that you continue your support of Our Lady of Grace by mailing your contributions to:

Thank you for being a member of our community.  We look forward to seeing you again soon.
