FISHERS ISLAND NOTICE OF ANNUAL SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLIC HEARING, BUDGET VOTE AND ELECTION SUFFOLK COUNTY, NEW YORK
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that the annual meeting and election of the qualified voters of the Fishers Island Union Free School District, Town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, will be conducted on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 for the purpose of voting on the budget proposition for the 2020-2021 fiscal year and the election of two (2) members to serve on the Board of Education;
AND NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing for the voters of the District on the 2020-2021 budget will be held on May 26, 2020 at 5:00pm, prevailing time, through video conference through Zoom Platform in accordance with Executive Order 202.26. The public hearing can be accessed through www.fischool.com and shall include:
- Presentation to the voters of a detailed statement of the amount of money which will be required for the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
- Discussion of all the items hereinafter set forth to be voted upon by absentee ballot at the Budget Vote and Election to be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2020.
- Transaction of such other business as may properly come before the meeting pursuant to Education Law of the State of New York and acts amendatory thereto.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN the Board of Education will have prepared and completed a detailed statement in writing of the amount of money which will be required during the 2020-2021 fiscal year for school purposes, specifying the several purposes and the amount for each. The amount for each purpose estimated necessary for payments to Boards of Cooperative Educational Services shall be shown in full, with no deduction of estimated state aid. The amount of state aid provided and its percentage relationship to the total expenditures shall also be shown. Such statement will be available beginning May 26, 2020. Such statement may be obtained by on the District website.[The May 26 Public Hearing will be recorded. AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that said Budget Vote and Election will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, by absentee ballot, in accordance with Executive Order 202.26 upon the following items:
- To adopt the annual budget of the School District for the fiscal year 2020-2021 and to authorize the requisite portion thereof to be raised by taxation on the taxable property of the District.
- To elect two (2) members of the Board of Education for a three-year term commencing July 1, 2020, and expiring on June 30, 2023, to fill the position held by Jamie Doucette and Robin Toldo whose terms expire on June 30, 2020.
- To authorize the annual budget for the fiscal year 2020-2021 to the Fishers Island Library, to be raised by taxation on the taxable property of the District.,
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that all candidates for the office of a Member of the Board of Education complete a Board of Education Candidate Application that is available on the District’s website at http://fischool.com/. Each Petition must be filed in the office of the District Clerk Leslie Tombari at email@example.com by scan (or photo if necessary) no later than May 11, 2020 at 5:00pm. This form may also be mailed to Mrs. Leslie Tombari at Fishers Island School, 78 Greenwood Road #600, Fishers Island, New York 06390. The candidates who win the highest number of votes will fill the expired term of the incumbent seats and shall serve on the Board of Education for a three year term commencing July 1, 2020 and expiring June 30, 2023.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that in lieu of petitions nominating candidates for the office of member of the Board of Education, self-nominations shall be filed with the Clerk of said School District via email at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 5:00pm, prevailing time, May 11, 2020.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting closure of school buildings, and in an effort to maintain health and safety, the District Clerk will NOT be registering qualified voters of the District.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, qualified voters can use the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Electronic Voter Registration Application to register to vote or to update the information they have on file with the New York State Board of Elections. Information regarding that can be located at https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/electronic-voter-registration-application. The District does not have control over the Department of Motor Vehicles Registration Application process or its registration timelines. Therefore, qualified voters who intend to register through the Department of Motor Vehicles should do so as soon as possible.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that military voters who are not currently registered may apply to register as qualified voters of the school district. An application for registration as a military voter can be requested by emailing Leslie Tombari at email@example.com. The application for registration must be received in the office of the clerk no later than 5:00 pm on May 14, 2020. In the request for an application for registration, the military voter is permitted to designate his/her preference for receiving the application for registration by mail, facsimile transmission or electronic mail.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that military voters who are qualified voters of the District may submit an application for a military ballot by emailing a request to the District Clerk at firstname.lastname@example.org; in order to receive a military ballot, the military ballot application must be received no later than 5:00 pm on May 14, 2020. In the request for an application for a military ballot, the military voter is permitted to designate his/her preference for receiving the application for a military ballot, and the military ballot, by mail, facsimile transmission or electronic mail. All qualified military voters’ ballot application and military ballot must be returned by mail or in person. Ballots for military voters shall be distributed to qualified military voters no later than May 15, 2020. Military ballots must be received (1) by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, and must show a cancellation mark of the United States postal service or a foreign country’s postal service, or must show a dated endorsement of receipt by another agency of the United States Government; or (2) not later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, and be signed and dated by the military voter and one witness, with a date ascertained to be not later than the day before the election.
AND FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that voting at such Annual Meeting and Election will consist of voting on the following propositions, as well as other such matters as may be lawfully presented at the meeting:
Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit:
RESOLVED, that the budget for the Fishers Island Union Free School District, Suffolk County, New York for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021 as presented by the Board of Education, is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in said District to be levied and collected as required by law.
Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit:
RESOLVED, that the budget for the Fishers Island Library, Fishers Island, Suffolk County, New York for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021, as presented by the Library Board of Directors, is hereby approved and adopted.
