Fishers Island’s Public Tennis and Basketball Courts

The tennis and basketball courts property is owned by the Fishers Island School District and is leased by the Town of Southold.

The tennis courts on School property across the street from the Community Center have been temporarily closed while maintenance and repairs can be done to the fence and court surfaces. The basketball courts are accessible and playable.

Below is information on the maintenance and repair efforts coming this spring included in a letter from Jeff Standish, Director Public Works explaining the process going forward.

“The Town of Southold Public Works Department was on Fishers Island yesterday, March 6, 2018. We were there to take down damaged sections of the fence around the tennis courts and secure the area. Upon further observation, we discovered more fencing that was unsafe and in need of replacement. Unfortunately, at this time we are required to shut down that area off to the public until the work has been completed.

The property is owned by the Fishers Island School District but is leased by the Town of Southold. The Town is responsible for maintenance and repair of this area.

In the 2018 budget, Supervisor Russell, Town Board & Public Works has budgeted funds for resurfacing the tennis courts and basketball court. We will be putting out a bid shortly and the work is expected to commence by spring. Once the surface work has been completed the new fencing will be installed. The timeline for the fencing, once the surface is complete, is by recommendation of the contractor.

I apologize for the closing of the tennis court at this time but this is in the interest of safety. The courts will reopen as soon Public Works can return to remove the unsafe fence sections. In the event you have additional questions please contact my office.”
