Fishers Island School Closure re: COVID-19

Legal Notice: Fishers Island School Annual Notice: School District Hearing, Budget Vote & Election

May 1, 2020

Dear Fishers Island Community,

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that schools in New York will remain closed through the end of the current academic school year.

I know that we were all hopeful for our school building to reopen this year, but I also know that this decision is the right one. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is, and will always remain our top priority. The decision that was made today will help assure that we continue to keep those we care about safe.

Although this decision means that we are unable to be together in person, our Distance Learning Program will continue to push our students forward academically and support all emotionally through the end of this school year. We are proud of the program we have built together and will work to continually enhance it in order to meet the needs of all of our students.

We will now work to specifically plan for our eventual reopening and further enhance the protocols, procedures, and practices to keep us all safe and healthy. We will work in cooperation with local and state health officials to ensure that our protocols meet the needs of our students, staff, and community.

The finality of this decision forces me to reflect on what it means for our 12th grade students. For most of us, this decision delays our return to school for a matter of months, for our graduating students, it is far different. To David, Jack, Jade, Fred, Sam, Ellanora, Ashley, Meg, and Betsy, I promise that our community will send you off from Fishers Island School in a way that celebrates and honors your time at FIS. The class of 2020 defines everything that we work for our graduates to be. You are all kind, hardworking, and care deeply about our island and community. We look forward to celebrating your graduation and witnessing all that you accomplish moving forward.

In the coming weeks, we will share more details on end of year events, final examinations, and the return of school materials. Until then, please continue to stay safe and reach out if we can provide anything that would be helpful to your family.

Thank you all for your continued support of our students. We will continue to get through this together and become stronger and more united as a result.

Dear Fishers Island Families,

I hope that this finds you all well. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that the New York State on PAUSE Initiative will now extend through May 15. This means that all schools and non-essential businesses will be closed state-wide at least through the middle of next month.

Please continue to reach out with any feedback on how we can best operate our Distance Learning Program. As our physical closure extends, we will continue to provide any academic or emotional support that we can for our entire school community. I have never been so proud of our incredible students and devoted staff for our continued learning throughout this crisis.

These are incredibly tough times, but we will continue to get through them together.

Be safe and stay well.

Christian

Dear Fishers Island Families,
I hope that this finds you all well. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that schools in New York will remain closed until April 29 to minimize the spread of the coronavirus. It was also announced that the June 2020 Regents Testing has been canceled. We will share more specifics on the cancellation of the Regents Testing once we have them.

Please continue to reach out with any feedback on how we can best operate our Distance Learning
Program. Our number one priority is to establish a continuation of learning that meets the academic and emotional needs of all students throughout the closure. We will provide additional supports wherever they may be helpful.

Be safe and stay well.

Dear Fishers Island Families,

I hope that this finds you all well. It is truly hard to believe that we have been out of school for two weeks now. However, I have never been so proud of the work that this school community has done in service of our students. I am entirely grateful for all of you and to call Fishers Island my home.

Today, Governor Cuomo ordered all New York Schools to be closed until at least April 15, 2020. It seems like the current plan will be to take the closure two weeks at a time. I will continue to update you all as we receive new directives from state and local officials.

As a reminder, we will formally begin our Distance Learning Program on Monday, March 30th. Our staff has been working hard to finalize plans and will communicate specific schedules, expectations, and supports for each grade level/course. Please access our recent Virtual Community Meeting for more information and specifics on our Distance Learning Program. The recording and presentation are both available at www.fischool.com.

I want to thank our entire school community for their continued support and positive feedback during the last several weeks. Your kind words and supportive messages have been constant reminders that serving this community is a true privilege.

Lastly, your feedback will be important as we continue to refine our plan to meet the needs of all of our students. Please communicate any needs with all members of our staff as we continue “to build our plane”. We will get through this together!

In your service, Christian Arsenault
