On May 2, Fishers Island School students participated in the Connecticut State Invention Convention (CIC), a state- level competition where students strive to invent or innovate upon their own device. This is the third year Fishers Island School has participated in the convention. Teachers Tawnya Eastman, Carol Giles, and Jared Kaplan guided the students through the invention process.

In order to get to the state level of the competition, Fishers Island School held a local version of the Connecticut Invention Convention. 20 fifth-eighth grade students dedicated themselves to the invention process at the Fishers Island Invention Convention. Each student presented their invention to a panel of judges and 10 students were selected to represent Fishers Island at the state level.

219 schools were present at this year’s CIC. Those schools were represented by 951 students, which were selected from a total of 15,000. Even with all that competition, the Fishers Island students had no problem standing out amongst that crowd; 5 of our students brought home awards, with 2 of the students receiving multiple awards.
