The ferry is our lifeline to the mainland, and all of us use the service regularly, and some are absolutely dependent on its reliability to earn a living, receive ongoing medical attention, and receive needed supplies on island. The governance is vested in a five person Board of Commissioners (BOC) who decide policy and provide oversight of the operation and staff. In the current year we have had only 3 commissioners, thereby requiring attendance of the whole to make a decision. For a variety of reasons it has been difficult to achieve a quorum in some instances. On August 12 we will have the annual election to elect new commissioners for the current two vacancies plus the seat held by Commissioner Chris Edwards who is completing his term.
Candidates Running for the 3 vacancies in 2014:
Harry Parker for a Term Of Five (5) Years
Chris Edwards for a Remaining Term Of Two (2) Years
Lucinda Herrick for a Remaining Term Of Two (2) Years
Andrew Ahrens for a Remaining Term Of One (1) Year
Harry Parker: Harry worked for the Metropolitan Museum from 1964 though 1973; directed the Dallas Museum of Art from 1974 to 1986; and directed the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco from 1987 through 2005 when he retired to Fishers Island with his wife, Ellen McCance, great granddaughter of Henry Ferguson. He was responsible for managing significant budgets and large workforces and, unusually for art museums, was a city employee leading a unionized department in San Francisco. His knowledge of boats and transportation services is limited, but his experience of directing public service organizations should prove relevant. Though the Parkers generally spend December/March in Puerto Rico, he promises to remain in touch and present as necessary.
Chris Edwards: Chris is completing his 5 Year Term on the Ferry District Board of Commissioners (BOC) and is running again with extensive experience as the most recent BOC Chairman. A full-time Fishers Island resident, Chris was born on island and works as a lobsterman and property manager, while serving as a volunteer fireman and as a member of the Island Community Board. He and his wife Trudi have raised their children here and looks forward to helping to guide the District in the next two years.
Lucinda Herrick: Lucinda has an MBA with professional experience that included being a Director of Finance and Strategic Planning within the Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. She was a Commissioner of the Fishers Island Ferry District 2011-2012 and was the Commodore of the Fishers Island Yacht Club 2008-2010. Lucinda has owned a home on Fishers Island since 1986 and, with her children, lived on-island for a year in the early 1990s. She regards the ferry operation as critical to the infrastructure of the island. She would like to be part of a team that ensures that the ferry operation is professionally managed, fiscally conservative and supports the needs of island businesses, year-round residents, seasonal residents, commuters and the ferry staff and crew.
Andrew Ahrens: Ace and his family have been coming to Fishers since 1980 and became a full-time resident in 2013. His professional background includes finance, head hunting, real estate and tele-communications site acquisition management. He is a real estate agent for Mystic Isle RE, the Sexton for St. John’s Church, and serves on the boards of the Fishers Island Conservancy and Fishers Island Library, and on the Land Use Committee. He hopes to be of particular assistance in the area of property management as the District is responsible for all the land and property on island owned by the Town of Southold.
