FICC’s Classic Movie Night: Ball of Fire (1941)

October 1 @ 7:00 pm

The Fishers Island Community Center is pleased to again offer Classic Movie Night! The movies will be shown in the Great Room on the 2nd floor of the FICC, with the elevator in full working order.

At this time, attendance limited to the first 18 people. Social distancing, masks required.

Doors open at 6:30pm, film at 7:00pm. Admission by donation.

Each movie will have a short introduction by former faculty David Hoch who taught a class in this subject.

Please remember to social distance and wear a mask. A small selection of drinks and snacks, are available in the vending machine in the 1st floor Café lounge, and you may BYO beverage.

The Defiant Ones (1958) Drama Starring Tony Curtis, Sidney Poitier, Theodore Bikel, Cara Williams, Directed by Stanley Kramer. 97 min. An early civil rights statement in the Jim Crow era, and a rousing adventure. Oscars for script and B&W cinematography.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) Mystery Starring James Stewart, Doris Day, Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. 120 min. All the Hitchcock ingredients, and a Best Song Oscar (guess!)

The Comancheros (1961) Western Starring John Wayne, Stuart Whitman, Ian Balin, Lee Marvin, Nehemiah Persoff, Patrick Wayne. 107 min. Big, sprawling Wayne western with an exuberant Elmer Bernstein score.
The Thing (1950) Science Fiction Starring Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey, James Arness, Dewey Martin, Robert Cornthwaite 87 min. Howard Hawks produced thriller, also a “Red Scare” allegory. James Arness’ 1st film before he became famous as Marshall Matt Dillon in TV’s Gunsmoke. Great Dimitri Tiomkin score.

Chinatown (1974) Film Noir Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston,  Directed by Roman Polanski. 131 min. Controversial noir tribute with Oscar-winning script by Robert Towne, considered by many critics the best script ever written. Subject of recent best-seller The Long Goodbye.
