FICC Classic Movie Night: Let It Ride (1989)

“Classic Movie Night” at the Community Center, 7pm

  • NY State has dropped the mask mandate, so it is no longer mandatory to wear a mask at the movie.
  • Admission is by donation. Microwave popcorn, soda, and water will be available, also by donation.

Each film will be introduced by David Hoch, a retired English professor who has taught several different film courses.

Thursday, Nov. 3- Let It Ride (1989)- comedy, 86 min. Rated PG-13

     Richard Dreyfus, Teri Garr, David Johanson, Jennifer Tilly, Robbie Coltrane, Allen Garfield.

Compulsive gambler finally hits a winning streak at a Florida horse-racing track. Fast-paced Damon Runyan-like story.

Thursday, Nov. 10-The Big Combo (1955)- film noir, 89 min.

     Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, Brian Donlevy, Richard Conte, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman.

A persistent cop goes after a cunning, sadistic racketeer. A cult film, stylishly directed.

Thursday, Nov. 17-The Grapes of Wrath (1940)- drama, 129 min.

     Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell (Oscar), John Carradine, Directed by John Ford (Oscar).

Uncompromising adaptation of Steinbeck novel about Oakie farmers making the trek to California during the Depression. Defining role for Fonda in one of the great American films.

Friday, Nov. 25-The Music Man (1962)- musical, 151 min.

     Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Buddy Hackett, Hermoine Gingold, Paul Ford, Ron Howard,

 Preston reprises his Broadway performance as salesman/con man who mesmerizes Iowa town with visions of a uniformed marching band. Tuneful slice of Americana.

Thursday, Dec. 1-Escape from Fort Bravo (1953)- western, 98 min.

     William Holden, Eleanor Parker, John Forsythe, William Demarest, Directed by John Sturges.

Well-executed Civil War-era story where Confederate prisoners are being held in an Arizona fort.

Thursday, Dec. 8-Airport (1970)-drama/suspense, 137 min. Rated PG

     Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset, Helen Hayes (Oscar), George Kennedy, Van Heflin.

All-star cast in one of the first ‘’disaster’’ movies detailing a hectic winter night at a metro airport.

Thursday, Dec. 15- The Quiet Man (1952)- comedy/romance, 127 min.

     John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald, Directed by John Ford (Oscar).

Boisterous blarney, with American boxer returning to his native Ireland, falling for a spirited lass, but has to deal with native customs, including a dowry and the woman’s bullheaded brother! A labor of love for Ford and his Irish-American cast. Oscar for Best Cinematography.

Thursday, Dec. 22-National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)- comedy, 97 min. Rated PG-13

     Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Diane Ladd, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki,

Funny saga of the Griswold family’s disaster-filled holiday season. Written by John Hughes.
