A special message on COVID-19 from Island Health Project (IHP)

A special message on COVID-19 to the Fishers Island Community from the Island Health Project

March 28, 2020

Dear All,

The COVID-19 global pandemic is unprecedented in nature and poses critical health and societal challenges to us all.  In the spirit of building the resilience of this Island and mitigating negative impacts as much as possible, the Island Health Project has committed to publishing weekly updates and recommendations to be shared with the entire Island community, beginning today.  These updates will be published on a special page on FishersIsland.net and will be organized into a regular format including (1) public health advice tailored for the Island and (2) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), with all successive updates archived in one place. Each week’s update will supersede that of the week before, and we will try to clearly highlight additional information and new advice so you can focus on what has changed.

We are coordinating our recommendations closely with the Island Community Board (ICB), and we are working with the Fishers Island Ferry and the Fishers Island Fire Department and District on emergency response and transportation. Please note that per state guidelines, we strongly discourage anyone from traveling back and forth on day trips off Island, unless absolutely essential, and you will be subject to a 14-day self-quarantine upon your return (each time) – please see details in the document below.

As you all know, Fishers Island does not have a governing body of its own, and various organizations play critical formal and informal roles in Island decision making.  In a public health crisis, the situation can change rapidly. If our advice or communications ever contradicts the latest New York laws and regulations on COVID-19, state law will always prevail.  Likewise, if our information to you is contradicted by the latest policies of various organizations with jurisdiction over transportation, emergency services, or anything else, please note that their policies shall prevail.   We nevertheless hope to play a helpful role assessing and advising you on the latest situation and we thank everyone for coming together at this time. Our goal is first and foremost to keep the Island healthy and observing proper protocols, and secondly, to provide clear and factual communications which minimize confusion or unnecessary alarm.

To the extent that the IHP’s recommendations go beyond the law or jurisdiction of any body, they should be considered strong recommendations that are for the good of the community, and we hope you will voluntarily respect them, or give us feedback on how you would like to see them evolve.

We will depend on FishersIsland.net to disseminate updates through their website and mailing lists, and we appreciate their help in helping us get the word out.  If you are not already a subscriber to FishersIsland.net’s Fog Horn mailing list and wish to be, please click here, scroll down to the bottom footer, and subscribe to the free newsletter.

In the meantime, stay safe, keep calm, keep your social distance, and wash your hands!
