IN MEMORIAM: Melen Arasimowicz Zito

by Jane Ahrens

Waterford: Melen “Mennie” Arasimowicz Zito of Waterford, formerly Fishers Island, N.Y.

I was almost 103 years old when I faded gently into a new world Oct. 25, 2022. Before I left, I was lovingly and expertly cared for by my daughter, MaryAnne Zito Alfieri for 32 years with help, at times, from family and friends. I was born Dec. 12, 1919, weighing in at a whopping one and one-half pounds. My mother was told to take me home where I was expected to live no more than a few days. Surprise!

I was blessed to have three children, raising them on Fishers Island as a partially blind, single mother. My children are MaryAnne Zito Alfieri (Tony) and Frank Zito (Cathy) of Waterford, and John Zito (Susan) of Bozman, Mont. Sadly, both sons and my son-in-law predeceased me. My grand and great-grandchildren include David Zito (Christine), Dylan, Shelby, and Anna; Sharon Dziecinney (Troy), Anna and Katie; and Jeff Zito, all of Waterford; Christopher Zito (Ali), Olivia of Renton, Wash., Meredith Sutherin (Ben), and Alison and Emma of Belgrade, Mont. While I have not listed them, and you know who you are, I am so very grateful for the love and attention given to me by my many nieces and nephews, both near and far away.

Checking in with me daily was Maureen Compton, my neighbor and confidant. It was always comforting to hear her voice. I also want to thank all of my daughter’s friends and family for not only helping her, but me as well. Our lives are enriched by their presence.

I want to close by confessing my entrance into heaven, when I meet my sons and son-in-law, will be a cause for controversy. As a lifelong fan of the “damn” Yankees, I gave up on them a week ago and chose to root for the Los Angeles Angels for the last week of my life and after instead. As avid Yankee fans, my heavenly family will not be happy with me.

If you care to contribute in my name to any non-profit, please consider Safe Futures, 16 Jay Street, New London CT, 06320 attn: Jane Cable or the VNA of SECT, 403 Frontage Road, Waterford, CT 06385. Since I have donated my body to science, there will be no formal service planned to celebrate my wonderful, long life.
