ICB: an Affordable Housing Discussion

Island Community Board

Topic: ICB Affordable Housing Meeting
June 1, 2022

Thank you to over 100 who were able to attend the zoom meeting. This meeting was recorded and will be posted on the ICB page this week.

Dear Fishers Islanders,

As you may already have heard, Southold township is preparing to vote on increasing the current land transaction tax from 2.0% to 2.5% for the exclusive purpose of supporting affordable housing.

On Fishers, Walsh Park has been successfully providing housing for over thirty years. However, due to current barriers, including the lack of favorable tax treatment, it is currently limited in the amount and kind of ownership it can offer to members of our community. It is possible that an organization funded by the new tax might become a silent, equity partner of an existing or would-be community member, purchase part of the house this person is seeking to buy, and thereby reduce their cost. This new approach might complement the things Walsh Park already does.

There are many issues involved. Should the first concern of housing policy on Fishers be to increase the supply of available houses in order to facilitate the growth of the year-round population? Or should it be to help the existing year-round population invest in their homes? Many suggestions have been made.

The ICB is hosting an hour-long brainstorming session on Zoom on this topic at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.  The purpose is to elicit ideas and help us draft specific proposals before the Southold Board puts the question on the ballot for a referendum.

We hope you will join us. Community feedback will be critical to shaping our approach on this subject. Link and password for the session are below.
