The Buoys Tree, An Island Collaboration

by Jane Ahrens

It’s back! And getting decorated!

Thank you for being a part of this Island community project
and help create our 2021 Island Buoy Tree

We lit up the tree!

There are buoys to take and paint on the left side of the movie theater (on the way to the Transfer Station) next to the Conservancy truck in bins. If you have buoys to donate for people to paint, please leave them in the bins with the others.

Thank you to the Conservancy’s coastal debris clean-up effort led by Michele Klimczak and others for the collection of buoys to start with.

How to paint buoys!

What to decorate with? This Buoy Tree project is fun for all. And, we know water-based (permanent when dry) acrylic paint works well. So use latex and oil-based paints you have sitting around. And a good permanent sharpie can add any details you like. Highly recommend spraying the finished buoy with something like Krylon clear spray. Don’t forget to sign it somewhere!

Did you paint a buoy for the tree? Please send us a photo of your buoy, or of you with your buoy, and we will make a photo gallery of all the contributors! finyinfo@gmail.com

If you have a buoy on the tree you would like to refresh, we will get it for you. Just email finyinfo@gmail.com or text Jane Ahrens.

Finished buoys to add to the tree can be left at the back of the foot of the tree.

In order to protect the tree form, PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE OR ADD A BUOY TO THE TREE. THAT WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF FOR YOU.

We hope community members of all ages, families, organizations, shops, districts, and businesses will pick up and paint a buoy and be represented on the tree.

Every buoy is beautiful!

Thank you to Harrison for the delivery and Tom for the construction in 2020!

The buoy tree frame was beautifully constructed by Tom Kexel and was delivered to the spot by Harrison Hall in 2020. Thank you to Tom for his creative and professional construction work and to Race Rock Gardening for the supplies for the frame. Thank you to Kristen Peterson for sourcing other stashes of found buoys to add to the pile too.
