IN MEMORIAM: Alexander “Sandy” Gaston

August 23, 2021

Dear Members of the Honolulu Council,

We are sad to report the passing of Alexander “Sandy” Gaston, a longstanding leader of our Council and current member of our Board of Directors.

For many years, Sandy shared his passion for the Sea Services through his constant commitment and unparalleled generosity. A 50-year member of the Navy League, Sandy was widely known for his deep patriotism and love of ships and the sea. Selfless service, civic responsibility, and volunteerism were etched in every fiber of his being.

Sandy served onboard a tank landing ship during the Vietnam War and never lost his love for the Navy. He was a life member of countless patriotic organizations that support the Navy and veterans. He loved and supported active-duty service members and their families, veterans, and patriotic youth – and they returned his love and admiration. Sandy’s legacy will live on through his generous support to many causes including museums and memorials in Hawaii and across the country associated with preserving history for future generations.

Sandy’s passing is a great loss for our community. His life truly exemplified the ideals of our nation and inspired all who knew him. Information on services will be shared when available.

A resident of Hawaii, Sandy also spent many summers on Fishers Island in his house overlooking Isabella Beach and was a strong supporter here of the American Legion Post #1045.
