A reminder to all Island Bikers

July 12, 2021

Good morning,

Last Friday afternoon I was riding my bike slowly on the North Hill road and had what could have been a very bad bike accident had I not been wearing a bike helmet.  Although I received some ugly, superficial road rash on my body and a cut near my eye which Chris expertly addressed after hours (thanks to Chris and IHP), I can only imagine what might have happened to my head had I not been wearing a helmet.

While many bikers on the Island do wear helmets far many do not under the guise of “it’s just a short way to XYZ”, “I ride carefully and slowly” or “I’ve never worn a helmet so why start now.”  I am an experienced rider who was moving at less than 10 mph when I rode through a pothole puddle and my front tire hit a hidden rock which turned the wheel perpendicular to the bike.  The bike stopped solid.  I went head over the handlebars onto the cement and my helmet-covered head hit the road very hard.

If such accidents can happen to experienced cyclists riding less than 1 mile from home while moving very slowly, they can happen to anyone.  To all Island cyclists of all ages and all sexes, please wear your helmets all the time, no exceptions! If you don’t have one, a high quality, stylish, inexpensive one can be easily purchased online or at any local bike shop.

Ride safely.
