An Opportunity to Serve: FI Harbor Committee

Opportunity to serve: In the mid-1990s, the Southold Town Board created a Fishers Island Harbor Committee to recommend policies for the management of the waters bounding Fishers Island and to assist in the administration of Town Code Chapter 157 “Fishers Island Harbor Management Law”.

The membership represents a wide range of groups interested in and using the waters bounding Fishers Island. Members shall be appointed for five-year terms. The Committee shall meet a minimum two times per year, prior to and after the boating season. Notice of the meeting shall be posted 10 days in advance.

This logo gets attached to over 80 mooring balls in West Harbor annually.

Our roll here is to keep some control over transient boaters who wish to come ashore for site seeing, food, walk the dog or visit friend, etc.

The federal rule is boaters are allowed to come ashore up to the high tide line. This is not easy to monitor in some locations.

This is an important factor in the control of people coming and going.
