A special message on COVID-19 to the Fishers Island Community from the Island Health Project & Island Community Board, #9

May 23, 2020

Dear fellow Fishers Islanders,

The Island Health Project is pleased to report that there have been zero new COVID-19 infections identified in our community, for the seventh straight week. Thank you for continuing to practice social distancing, wear masks, and encourage your fellow Islanders to do the same.

As promised, today we are ready to share our Summer 2020 Strategy for Mitigating COVID-19 Risk on Fishers Island in draft form. It is attached here (click on title page (COVID-19) image below) and posted on www.fishersisland.net

Please read the plan, ask your friends and family to read the plan, and tune in on Zoom to the ICB meeting at 6 pm on Tuesday, May 26 (not 5 pm as previously planned; that time overlaps with a school board meeting), I will personally present the plan on screen.

A few points we’d like to make now:

  1. Assuming that the NY state “stay at home” order is lifted on May 28 as expected or soon thereafter, we will no longer be recommending a 14 day quarantine.
  2. This new plan seeks to shorten quarantine time dramatically by introducing a new Enroll-Test-Check-Protect protocol. The entire strategy is about managing risk.
  3. In exchange for a shorter quarantine time, everyone (including babysitters, employees, year-rounders, and seasonal residents) will need to enroll in the Fishers Island COVID-19 census, register with IHP, activate MyChart, get tested for COVID-19 as directed by IHP, and agree to a symptom checking program that will become a necessary part of our regular routine all summer long. Di Shillo and the office staff are available to help you with this remotely (call 631-788-7244). This is a major new commitment we will be asking of all of you.

As you browse the attached document, make a private note of your questions, hold those questions until after the ICB presentation Tuesday. You may email questions and feedback to Ficovid@fiihp.net. We are intending to finalize the plan by June 9. It will be subject to change as the situation on Fishers Island and in NY and CT changes in the months to come.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation – we hope everyone will be opting in.

As always, do not hesitate to call or text me at 917-903-3516 if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and need medical advice.

In health,

Dr. Christopher Ingram
Physician in Residence, Fishers Island
