The Fishers Island Seagrass Management (FISM) Coalition reached out to MPA Watch hoping to develop a volunteer monitoring program to quantify “human uses” of Fishers Island’s seagrass beds. The timing was right, and MPA Watch agreed to work with Fishers Island.
Take a walk on the beach to help protect our seagrass! The Fishers Island Seagrass Management (FISM) Coalition is looking for volunteers to participate in our MPA (Marine Protected Area) Watch monitoring program.
Volunteers will help us monitor human use of seagrass habitats around Fishers Island and will be required to walk set paths along different beaches around the island. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and need to be willing and able to walk transects 3-4 times a week. Training will be provided. Community service hours available.
If interested, please email the FISM coordinator, Connor Jones, as soon as possible.
