Island Stewardship Helps Summer’s Least Terns

by Jane Ahrens

Thanks to our caring and watchful community; several species of shorebirds have begun to thrive again on Fishers Island.

This month’s documentation of 2 Least Tern chicks successfully hatched and fed by parents within Sanctuary of Sands, parallel to Elizabeth Field runway, brings that family of Least Terns (2 pair and 1 single) to a total of 7 birds.

On behalf of the Fishers Island Conservancy, I would like to personally thank every Islander that continues to leash their dogs and dispose of trash properly within this wonderfully healthy and abundant marine ecosystem, that provides critical habitat for our returning shorebirds now in “numbers” for a tiny island!

With Gratitude,
