Pocketful of Piping Plovers

by Jane Ahrens

July 2019 marks the first summer in at least a decade where 13 Piping plovers are “thriving” on the western tip of Fishers Island.

Sanctuary of Sands, a refuge with safe shoals, tidal pools, and thick wrack lines appears to be the perfect recipe for this “baker’s dozen”, allowing us all the privilege to witness quite a conservation comeback.

Please continue to rally behind our precious wildlife and kindly leash all dogs within this critical habitat during July and August.
