August 22, 1941 – June 2, 2019
Freddy King, who spent every summer at Fishers Island for thirty plus years, passed away June 2 at his home in Westport, CT. He was the son of long-time Island residents Al and Nancy King, grandson of Jansen Noyes and brother of Kenny King Howe, David King, and Susie Stickney, as well as two nephews and two nieces. He was educated at Proctor Academy and Colorado College.
Beloved by the friends he grew up with on Fishers Island, Freddy had an infectious laugh and a keen sense of mischief. Many remember him in bright and colorful clothes, regularly two-stepping at the Big Club’s Saturday night soirees.
Freddy developed his life long love of hunting at Fishers, as a member of the Fishers Island Rod and Gun Club, spending many special hours with Otis Horn and his sons Luis and Larry. In fact, he spent a lifetime shooting around the world with the Horns. He founded The Sportsman’s Edge, Ltd. and King Gallery in New York, selling the finest sporting art to a loyal clientele who valued his discerning judgment and keen eye.
One of his best friends, Colby Chester, nicely captured Freddy’s lovely nature in the following words, “Freddy was our Brother Bear, and who among us could have found a better friend? Rest in peace, dear Freddy. You were always the King of Kindness.”
