Kayak and Paddle Board Safety Equipment and Vessel ID

by Jane Ahrens

From the New York State Police Station Commander, Riverside, NY

Paddle craft [such as a kayak, paddle board, canoe or row boat] have been the leading cause of deaths on the waterways for the last few years.

  • Subjects operating a paddle craft are to have a personal flotation device and sound device (whistle) while operating during the day.
  • If operating at night, in addition to a personal flotation device and sound device (whistle), they are to also have an all-round white light.
  • If subjects operating a paddle craft do not have the proper equipment, the voyage can be terminated.

The Coast Guard has an ID sticker they issue to paddle craft owners in case one turns up on the beach. Trooper Charlie Witczak on Fishers Island will have a supply of ID stickers. You may contact him at the State Trooper barracks (631) 788- 7600.
