Support the American Legion Post 1045 Fundraising Effort

by Jane Ahrens

The Fishers Island American Legion officers, members, and volunteers have spent countless hours maintaining and improving the Alfred P. Grebe Post 1045 hall structure over the decades. Now it is time to help the Legion make necessary repairs to the building and the community’s assistance is requested and needed.

Gifts of time, talent and treasure are most appreciated!

Already completed:

  • New septic field fall of 2017
  • Donation of commercial grade gas oven with stove top from The Pequot fall 2017
  • Donation of gas grill fall 2017
  • Repair of exterior shingles west and north sides 2018
  • Installation of 1 of 2 new sliding doors to deck spring 2018

Overview:
The Legion’s building was completed in the mid-1950s. The original roof was replaced 25 years ago and has withstood winter storms, hurricanes, and summer heat. It has had a few leaking spots that have been patched as needed, however, for the integrity of the building, the roof needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

The Legion’s outside deck, enjoyed by many in the 3 seasons, has ‘had a nice life’. The deck floorboards have splintered and some are rotting, making it unsafe in places to use. The deck floorboards and some railing needs to be replaced, and it is anticipated that some or all of the sub-framing will need to be removed and replaced as well. That can’t be determined until the floorboards are removed. It is hoped that it can be financed and work completed prior to the next Memorial Day picnic and used for summer enjoyment.

The Legion’s kitchen appliances have served hundreds if not thousands of dinners to members, community members, fundraisers and private events. This month the Legion officers accepted a donation of a commercial grade gas oven with stove top from The Pequot which has been delivered. Funds are needed to have the old oven/stove disconnected and the new put in place and professionally connected. Other kitchen updates would include the annual professional cleaning and possible painting.

Outside across from the deck is a covered outdoor grill. This structure, currently appearing as a ‘lean-to’, needs repair and reinforcement materials, hopefully in time to be used for the next Memorial Day picnic.

The Legion’s Wish List includes replacing the 2nd of 2 sliding doors to the deck, which is inoperable due to the building settling over time; removing the carpet in the bar area and either finishing the floor or recarpeting the area; repairing or replacing the exterior front entry stair landing where the mortar in disintegrating; and replacing the front entrance pillars; and funds to purchase paint, brushes and other supplies needed by volunteers for general cleanup, repair and cosmetic updates.
