
John Joseph ‘Jack’ Clavin died peacefully on May 9, 2017, in the care of the extraordinary staff of the VNA Hospice in Vero Beach, FL. Jack approached his death the way he approached his life – with courage, with dignity and with a sense of humor. He will be missed by every person whose life he touched.
Jack was born January 7, 1927, to Abigail and Harry Clavin in Valley Stream, NY. In 1945, he joined the US Navy where he served in Guam as a surf landing unit captain. He attended St. Bonaventure University and graduated in 1951.
Jack worked for NY Telephone Company as a Division Manager of Westchester, NY. He served as Trustee of the Village of Rockville Centre.
He later became General Manager of the Fishers Island Telephone Company. Jack and Peggy lived and worked on Fishers Island for 20 years, where Jack also became a member of the Fishers Island Fire Department, Captain of the sea-born ambulance known as the Sea Stretcher, and as Harbormaster.
They moved to East Moriches, NY in 2001. In 1989, Vero Beach, FL became their permanent and beloved retirement home.
He is survived by his wife and best friend Peggy, his daughter Mary Reinhard (Kevin), son Brian (Suzy), daughter Maura, and son John (Mary Gene). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter.In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Jack’s name to VNA Hospice, 901 37th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
