Fishers Island has recently had more than a few individuals, couples and families interested in settling on Fishers Island, however, the lack of housing is currently prohibiting a real population growth.
This letter to the editor could have been written last week, but it was published in the summer of 2002.
Some progress has been made with regard to housing. Walsh Park has probably doubled the number of year-round units since this letter was written, the School is certainly not in decline, and the charter services have given those who want to work off Island a chance to do so. Despite all this, housing remains the number one challenge.

To quote Speedy Mettler 15 years later, “Come to the [now Island Community Board (ICB)] meetings and work with us to develop and implement intelligent solutions. It is very late – but not too late if we start a housing plan now. Right now!”
A Next Step: If you, or anyone you know, has a place (home, garage apartment, cottage, or anything) for rent or sale please reach out to an island real estate agent and/or Walsh Park. These professionals know of people who are interested in renting and buying and can be of assistance. You may also place a Classified ad on FishersIsland.net if you would like to pursue this on your own.
