Lady Gorham, Barbara (Bobbie) Gorham, age 95, of Essex, CT, Pembroke, Bermuda, and Fishers Island, NY, passed away on Memorial Day May 25, 2015, at Essex Meadows, in Essex, CT. She was the beloved wife of Sir Richard Gorham who predeceased her on July 7, 2006. She was born April 11, 1920 in Jersey City, NJ, the daughter of William and Catherine McIntire. She leaves her five children: daughters, Robin Sedgwick (Harry Sedgwick) of Old Lyme, CT, and Christine Cox (Robert Cox) of Sarasota, FL; her sons Tredick Gorham (Robin Gorham) of Smith’s Parish, Bermuda, Arthur Gorham of Hilo, HI, and Anthony Gorham also of Smith’s Parish, Bermuda. She also leaves her grandchildren: Chad Auchincloss, Hilary Wittmann (Christopher Wittmann), Rachel Gorham, Nathan Gorham, Julie Weare (Richie Weare), Liza Gorham and Taylor Gorham; and her great-grandchildren: Crawford, Evelyn, James and Naraya. Her dear sister, Jean Leuchtenburg, of Essex, CT, also survives her.
Barbara was born in Jersey City, raised in Englewood, NJ attending the Dwight School there, and The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT. She then worked with the New York Junior League in NYC. In 1948 she married Richard Masters Gorham and moved to Bermuda, where she lived for the next 60 years.
Barbara was a tireless volunteer for the King Edward VII Hospital, the English Speaking Union, the Bermuda Girl Guides and the Bermuda Philharmonic. She loved to travel, had an adventurous spirit, and an international circle of devoted friends. In addition to her home in Bermuda, she spent parts of every year in London, England and Fishers Island, NY.
A service will be held at Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Road, Essex, CT, in the Hamilton Room on Saturday, May 30 at 11:00am. The family will be burying Barbara in Bermuda over Columbus Day weekend next Fall which will include a Celebration of Life for her.
