Fishers Island School was filled with song, music and beautiful artwork for the Winter Concert and Art Show on Thursday, December 11.
Principal Karen Goodwin welcomed everyone to the evening’s event. In her opening remarks she shared that educational research has shown talent CAN be grown if the following three conditions exist: Ignition, Master Mentors and Deep Practice. Karen reminded the audience that, “In this school we have all three – upper class and older student role models, dedicated and accomplished teachers, and time and inclination for deep practice to achieve visible success.” Talent was certainly in evidence Thursday evening in the singers, musicians and artists of all levels!
1. Ignition: something ignites the possibility for kids. Typically it’s a model, such as a peer or older student that demonstrates what is possible.
2. Master Mentors that support the child’s growth. Teachers, community volunteers and parents/ family can serve in this role.
3. Deep practice. Practice that leads to extraordinary performance. Student determined to achieve high levels.
