Waiting for the H.O.G. Parade!

The 44th H.O.G. Tournament, played at the Fishers Island Club, was a rousing success this Labor Day Sunday. Net proceeds from the tournament support medical care for all Fishers Island residents and visitors through the Island Health Project (IHP).

The idea for the tournament on Labor Day weekend was hatched at the Harbor Bar in 1969 (hence the name Harbor Open Golf, better known as the H.O.G.). The game format has remained the same – 4 clubs and a putter per team – but it has grown exponentially over the ensuing 44 years!

From the FIC Weekly Update: “We completed another beautiful week of golf here on Fishers Island as we wrapped up our “summer season” with the 44th Annual H.O.G. Tournament. A full field of twenty-four teams competed for the costume, parade and the golf events. The proceeds of the Harbor Open Golf Tournament support the Island Health Project. Thank you to all of the participants and volunteers including the ladies who operated the various bars and games. We even had a band playing on the 17th tee as the musicians rocked the day. One last highlight was seeing Nick from the Grounds Staff drive ball after ball from the 14th tee to the 14th green – a mere 355 yards! Nick raised an additional $1,200 for the IHP.”

“Noon Balloon” H.O.G. Award is given in memory of Johnny Bartol and is awarded each year to the single participant in the tournament who exhibits fantastic H.O.G. spirit! At the discretion of the H.O.G. judges, the selection can be based on an especially creative or unique costume, theme or personality, exceptional/entertaining theatrical performance (in relatively good taste) but most importantly shows notable, over the top, H.O.G. spirit – a standout! This year the award was presented by Norma Bartol, Hilary Hotchiss and Perry Bartol to Sayles Braga.
