A Great Cause for the Fishers Island School
October 20, 2013 ~ By Jane Ahrens

Having braved wind, rain, hail and more in recent years, the golfers found themselves teeing off to support the Fishers Island Teachers’ Association Golf Tournament’s good works on a perfect late October day.
Golfers from on and off island numbering 100 strong, playing on 20 teams of 5 in a best ball/diminishing scramble game format, traversed the spectacular Big Club links course Sunday afternoon.
The annual golf tournament has been held for over 25 years said Science Teacher Carol Giles, “It has been held for as long as I can remember – and began way before I arrived on Island”. Held each year the Sunday after Columbus Day, it is the culmination of the Fishers Island Club course golf season’s events. Head Pro Dan Colvin added, “It’s a great tournament to end our season with, and for an important cause that supports our island students”.
Proceeds from the tournament go directly to the students of the Fishers Island School. Principal Karen Goodwin added, “This effort is so important to our students who benefit directly from the generosity of so many. These donations fund important student learning opportunities not regularly funded by the District”. Last year’s funds supported field trips including a rafting and zip line trip in the Berkshires; covered expenses for students to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) conference; sent fourteen players to basketball camp; and made possible a $10,000 donation to the Fishers Island School’s Class of 2013 college scholarship fund.
As the golfers gathered before heading out to play, Carol thanked the Fishers Island Club for their donation of golf carts and use of the course for the day, and the players and volunteers for their support. This year’s faculty volunteers, who organized the tournament and supplied sandwiches, drinks and cookies included Math Teacher Nate Matzdorff, Science Teacher Carol Giles, Kindergarten Teacher Meg Atkin, Music Teacher Chris Dollar, 5th and 6th Grade Teacher Tawnya Eastman, History Teacher Michael George, Computer Teacher Linda Bean, 3rd and 4th Grade Teacher Jill Paciorek, English Teacher Ibby Sawyer, Art Teacher Carrie Sawyer, Foreign Language Teacher Christine Anifantakis, Physical Education Teacher Dan Gillan, and Technology Teacher Jared Kaplan.
