April Gardening 2013

April has finally arrived, although the first few days on Fishers Island it felt like the beginning of March! It has been a long winter this year, but signs of spring are beginning to appear and I opened up my shed this past weekend and brought out my favorite tools and started my gardening year.

My Favorite Gardening Tools
Small Spade:
This tool gets in between plants and is especially good for adding plants to the flower boarder and transplanting old ones without making too much of a mess.

Dandelion Weeder:
The weeder is very handy in digging out Dandelions or any other weed or plant with a long root.

Nejiri Gama Hoe:
A Japanese small lightweight hoe that is superb in cultivating beds and loosening weeds, probably the one tool I could not live without!

Cobra Weeder:
This sharp little tool is great at weeding between the cracks on walkways.

Fiskars Short Pruner:
All Fiskars shears are terrific, but this one is a particularly handy pruner, just a bit stronger than regular garden clippers.

Digging Fork:
A digging fork is a wonderful tool to use to loosen the soil in your vegetable garden and to lift perennials gently that need to be transplanted.

Not in the picture, but definitely on my list, are nitrile garden gloves and a small child’s garden rake that is indispensible in cleaning up flowerbeds without damaging established plants.
