William H. Wood Jr., 91, of West Hartford, and Fishers Island, NY, beloved husband of Mary Andrews Lewis Wood, to whom he was married for 62 years, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Hanover, NH, the son of the late William H. and Mabel (Munson) Wood, Bill graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy (1939), Yale University (1943) and University of Michigan Law School (1948). He was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II where he served with distinction as a 1st Lieutenant Navigator. Bill began his law career at Hoppin, Carey and Powell in Hartford where he was a Senior Partner for many years. He later moved to and eventually retired from Shipman and Goodwin.
Bill was a natural athlete and loved all sports. He was a member of the Golf Team and Captain of the Ice Hockey Team at Yale. He also enjoyed fishing, skiing, and was a competitive bridge player. As an avid golfer, he was a member of the Hartford Golf Club and the Fishers Island Country Club. Before he joined the Fishers Island Country Club, he was very active in the Hay Harbor Golf Club, where he won the Men’s Club Championship several times, and was president of the club from 1978 to 1980. He loved Fishers Island and spent as much of his free time there as he could.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his three chil-dren: Nancy Andrews Wood of New Britain, William H. Wood III of Avon, and Richard Lewis Wood of Fishers Island, NY; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his three sisters, Frances, Beulah and Katherine.
