
Nancy Whitney Gerry, 95, of Boca Grande, Florida, and Fishers Island, New York, died peacefully September 26, 2012 in Englewood, Florida. Born March 26th, 1917, she attended the Brearley School in New York City, and the Foxcroft School in Middleburg, Virginia. Henry Averell Gerry, her husband of 60 years, preceded her in death in 2000. They lost their son, Averell, in 1960.
Nancy’s love of horses took her from the fox hunting field, where sidesaddle was her choice of seat, to the world of steeple chasing, where her amazing ‘chaser, Flat Top, and his trainer, Janet Elliot, gave her many exciting and successful races. Her love of sport and family, her gusto for life were inspirational to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
Nancy is survived by her children: Sheldon (Paul), Ann, Nancy (Dick), and Richard; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Alice Lorillard; her wonderful helper of eight years, Theresa Constantine; her Westie, Snowy; and many other family members and devoted friends.
Burial will be on Fishers Island and the memorial services in Boca Grande and on Fishers Island will be announced at a later date.
