Roland C. Sherrer, Jr., 79, of Oyster Bay, NY, Fishers Island, NY and South Londonderry, VT passed away on March 16, 2017, in Oyster Bay, NY, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Thelma C. Sherrer (Cremer). He is the beloved father of Christopher C. Sherrer of Alexandria, VA (Jessica), Charles D. Sherrer of New York, NY (Elizabeth), Alexandra B. Diffee of Richmond, VA (Craig) and stepfather to Peter B. Moss, Jr. of London, England and Constance Skeele of Charlotte, NC and five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Roddy was born July 4, 1937 in Garden City, Long Island, the son of Fanny and Roland Charles Sherrer. He attended Choate Rosemary Hall, The Gunnery School, Babson College and the New York Institute of Finance. Rod began his Wall Street career during the late 1960’s in commercial banking for Marine Midland Bank. He joined Spear Leeds & Kellogg shortly thereafter becoming a partner and a member of the American and New York Stock Exchange. His career spanned thirty years before retiring. The firm sold to The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc in 2000. During the 1990’s, Roddy was a board member of the SparTrust III, a US focused investment portfolio controlled by BankHaus Carl Spangler & Co, Salzburg, Austria.
His interests included travel, skiing, gardening, car racing, boating, music and history. In his retirement years, he loved spending time in Salzburg, Austria, Klosters, Switzerland and Antigua, WI, where he developed many wonderful friendships. Roddy will be remembered for his quick wit, dry sense of humor and his loyalty to his family and close friends.
