Fishers Island Community Center Summer Programs

The Community Center is hard at work preparing for a summer of fun and has already finalized plans for the following programs and events. There’s more in the works – keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for updates!

Howard Park Painting Workshop
Howard Park returns to teach several painting workshops this summer. On June 26 & 27, we host Howard for a sketchbook class where you will learn how to make quick sketches with pen, ink, and some watercolor. For a weeklong focus on plein air painting, join us July 17 – 21 to work in oils, watercolors, and acrylics, and learn techniques like line & wash. The last workshop, August 14 & 15, teaches how to paint landscapes in a flash, with just oils. Materials can be supplied by Howard at a nominal cost if they are needed. All levels of painters are welcome to these courses! To register and find out more visit

Kindersculls is a half-day summer camp for 4-9 year-olds full of activities such as daily craft projects and games (both in and out of boats); rowing drills; lessons in boat handling and maintenance; snack time and more! With safety as the primary focus, space is limited to 8 athletes per session (8 for the morning, 8 for the afternoon) in order to keep a 4:1 rower to coach ratio. All rowers wear life vests whenever they’re in the boats or near the water regardless of their swimming capability. In 2017, Kindersculls will be held August 7-11, with both a morning session from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and an afternoon session from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. To register and find out more visit

Summer Ballet
Ana Rose Webster, a faculty member at the Fishers Island School and assistant director of this year’s IPP Morning Program, will be extending her year-round ballet program into the summer. Taught at four levels from age 3 to 12, the classes will introduce and strengthen ballet technique at an age-appropriate level. Lower classes focus on developing body strength, gross motor skills, rhythm, musicality, and pattern execution through barre work and basic group movements on the floor. Upper classes build upon basic technique, improve strength and flexibility, and work on group synchronization through barre work, floor work, and routines. To register and find out more about these classes visit

Play Groups
Due to popular demand for some activities for the youngest crowd, the Community Center will be hosting play groups in its playroom on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from July 6 to August 31. Because this is as much an opportunity for caretakers as children to socialize, a caretaker must accompany each child and times are loosely structured to allow for some overlap. 9 am: one-year-olds; 10 am: two-year-olds; 11 am: three-year-olds. There is no instructor and no cost for play groups.
