On July 27, 2014, six members of Fishers Island School’s judo team competed in the Connecticut Nutmeg State Games Judo Championships. Emma Cypherd, Thad Allen, Javier Perez, Meg Allen, Constance Toldo, and Jackson Eastman competed alongside of fifteen fellow members of New London County Judo Club in a full day elimination event. Each match consisted of a three minute competition. Points are awarded for throws, half throws, quarter throws, and pins. The students not only practice every Thursday for two hours during the school year, but an option of summer camp sessions is available. Some students even took advantage of both sessions of summer camp in preparation for the State Games.
Competitors were categorized by age, weight and rank challenging members of other dojos from across Connecticut. Winners were awarded medals based on their match successes. Emma earned a bronze medal and Jackson and Constance won their divisions earning gold medals. With the help of the six members from Fishers Island School, New London County Judo rose to the top winning first place in the Junior Division (ages 5-16) of the State Championship.
